For parents

Language is probably the most complex thing humans have to acquire. This acquisition starts in early infancy and continues throughout life.

The Groupe de recherche sur le langage at UQÀM studies how infants learn their native language. As you may already know, your child probably understands in part what you say before one year of age, and at that moment the first words might be pronounced. Our studies concentrate on infants from the age of 2 months to about 7 years of age. During the study, baby sits on mom or dad's lap and listens to speech sounds while looking at images, a checker board for instance, on a screen. We observe the baby's responses to those speech sounds. Usually, the study with each baby lasts between 10 and 30 minutes, although about 30 minutes are necessary for us to explain to you in details what will be happening during and after the observation.
